May 2019 WA State Legislature approved $450,000 in the 2019–21 Capital Budget for the Little Badger Mountain Public Trail project. A few years ago, Badger Mountain was in danger of becoming overcome with development (why do people need big houses on top of beautiful places). Badger Mountain has two different trails up. It goes over the shoulder of Badger Mountain with views of the “P” as you hike. Rising to 1,579 feet at its highest point, the mountain has 5 unique trails, each giving you a different challenge whether you’re on foot, bike, or horse. However, maps and USGS references are/were basing information of the mountain before any structures were added to the hilltops.In the process of constructing the communications towers areas on the hilltops, the actual highest point was shaved down. In 2018, the trail received a nice update which now allows hikers to bypass the steep stone stairs which climb, precipitously up the face of Badger Mountain just outside of Trailhead Park. The Friends of Badger Mountain group was formed in 2003 with the goal to preserve the area’s scenic views and open spaces. Badger Mountain features beautiful views of the Columbia Basin you won’t get anywhere else in the Tri-Cities. This particular trail is Canyon Trail and starts at 525 Queensgate Dr, Richland, WA (This is considered Trailhead Park). This is the original official trail on Badger Mountain that was mapped out, improved and maintained by the Friends of Badger organization.
